OK, so, my son’s teacher and his cutesy family are moving to Yorkshire. Being a hippy, non-materialist type, he doesn’t want people to spend money on him. I am planning to buy him a box of tea and do him a playlist of artists who come from Yorkshire, to help them on their merry way.

This is my effort so far:
1. Thankfully, not living in Yorkshire – Dexys Midnight Runners
2. We don’t need this fascist groove thing – Heaven 17
3. Song for whoever – Beautiful South
4. Being boiled – Human League
5. Louise – Tony Christie
6. Serious – H
7. Every kinda people – Robert Palmer
8. When love breaks down – Prefab Sprout
9. Each and every one – EBTG
10. Put your records on – Corinne Bailey Rae
11. Say hello, wave goodbye – Soft Cell
12. Love me again – John Newman
13. Poison arrow – ABC
14. Don’t let the sun catch you crying – Paul Carrick
15. You are so beautiful – Joe Cocker (although I don’t really know him much so if there’s a better suggestion, I’m all ears)
16. Common People – Pulp
17. Keep on keeping on – The Redskins
18. Come on home – EBTG
19. Valentine – H
20. What? – Soft Cell
21. Disco 2000 – Pulp
22. The look of love – ABC
23. Happy hour – The Housemartins
24. Loving arms – Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott
25. London Calling – the Clash (just because it’s inevitable that it will!!)

Anyone got any suggestions? Obviously, any choices have to be socially acceptable to me so don’t go giving me a load of soulless, indy bollocks. I want to keep it quite accessible so no Uncle Joe and the Hendos, who live next door and play in their garden shed. It’s got to be something that won’t embarrass my children.

In doing it, I have learnt a lot of things about myself.
1. How much I loved Soft Cell and had forgotten;
2. How I used to love Martin Fry, think it was the shiny suits, Swiss Tony boys could always turn my head;
3. How I could choose 17 EBTG songs on a playlist, not two, because they are fantastic. Tracy Thorn must be in the running for Britain’s greatest female voice;
4. How, of your boy Hawley’s songs, I like Serious the most. Really, I do. Who knew?
5. The Chi Lites have no connections with Yorkshire whatsoever.

Anyway, you don’t have to come out and play but it might be a bit of fun…x

Your Joe Cocker is a good choice.

You could include Dave Berry (Crying Game or Strange Effect)?

The Clash played their first gig in Sheffield (as did Small Faces, I think), so they're allowed really, anyway.

For a fuller (slightly less tasteful) selection, you need some Goth from Leeds (Sisters/Mission), kit bag anarchy (New Model Army), and a bit of metally stuff, (Def Leppard, Saxon).

For a fuller (more tasteful) selection, something(s) from the Waterson/Carthy clan.

Fake Tales of San Francisco - Arctic Monkeys, obvious Sheffield connection but also mentions
Rotherham in the lyrics! :Hoorah

Maybe haven't quite made it big enough yet...but my favourite from the past few years from Yorkshire.

Gang Of Four - Damaged Goods
The Mekons - Where Were You?
(although later Mekons stuff feat. Sally Timms could be friendlier sounding to "hippie ears") ;-)

Barry Ryan :eh? (also from Leeds. Does your son's teacher perchance teach German? How about including Ryan's "Zeit macht nur vor dem Teufel halt" then - for a laugh)

Great list for your project, Helen, and also top additional suggestions, I think
(says a Kraut that never has crossed the Channel... how absurd) :shock:

Uh, I forgot:

The Smoke, "My Friend Jack"

and/or
Be-Bop Deluxe, "Maid In Heaven" or "Advenures in a Yorkshire Landscape"

(Oh dear, now it's getting quite eclectic ...)

Exapno, I know nothing about Prefab Sprout, being a funk, soul, sister and all, but it's a nice song. As I mature like a ripe cheese, I feel I can do things just because I like to, like having most of my iPod consisting of Rod Stewart and having plain biscuits with my tea. So, the Sprout song fits.

Have to say, am discovering a bit of an appreciation for Pulp, which I never really had at the time. Again, being a soulie, they weren't really my bucket of fish. Woodchip wallpaper and unrequited love. The story of my teenage life, that.

And thank you peeps, will try some of these out. You learn something new and all that. xxx

Your rules Helen :D Prefab are from County Durham which was the headsctatchet. Rockin Rodney fits the stereotype of the stingy Yorkshireman so he'd be a shoe in

I'm just enjoying reading this list and thinking about all the awesome music on it! I see many favorites, and then a few I didn't know, like the Hosts. WOW. Must get their record--sounds so, so good! (*)

Exapno, told you I know nothing about them! I am removing them as we speak. Dave Berry, I have rejected, and the Arctic Monkeys too. And there will never be any heavy metal on anything I have to do with ever. But Kate Rusby can go in. She's nice. And God Loves A Drunk is fantastic. Thank you all. I have bought him the Rough Guide to Yorkshire too which it appears I could do with myself. Yorkshire Sculpture Park looks amazing... xx
