Loudon Wainwright III last Thursday at the Leicester Square Theatre.

The show was called 'Surviving Twin' and was part spoken-word, part man-&-guitar. He examined his relationship with his father, his father's relationship with his father, and how he felt about his own son when he was born. It was moving, funny and very absorbing. An hour and a half extremely well spent.

The Distractions were probably the lost pop-punk band from Manchester. One great album "Nobody's Perfect", then they split up and re-appeared 30 years later with two more fantastic albums from the pens of Mike Finney and Stephen Perrin. Stephen is now a doctor in New Zealand, so he can't make reunion gigs easily, so Mike and original drummer Alex Sidebottom have put together a version of the band which plays only stuff from the first album and before. They played at Gulliver's in Manchester last night and they were fantastic.

Just got in from Elbow's last night of their current tour at Manchester Apollo. Just wonderful. Guy Garvey seems like a thoroughly decent bloke, and that voice! (It would have been even better if Mr Hawley had popped over the Peninnes to join in with a rendition of The Fix...)

Last Neil McSweeney / Vera Van Heeringen / Alan Tan Lan

Saturday 1st April Garmon House Trefriw nr Llanwrst

Probably one of the best nights ever - Alan [Mwnci / Y Niwl] kicked off with songs from the five albums his is currently working on  and then dashed off down the road to an Y Niwl gig that was taking place - Neil / Vera did a split set show over about and hour and a bit featuring tunes from the first few albums in part one with more of the same plus several from the new album in the second half.

I could ramble on but needless to say for me this was as good as it gets - Neil is up there with Richard / Ron Sexsmith / Ian Hunter / Carwyn Ellis [Colorama / Plu / Bendith].

I think over the past few years I have hardly seen anyone else - the last month I have caught Neil four times - and the next three months includes Richard [1] Ron [5] Ian [5] - Carwyn isn't touring the UK [currently with Edwyn Collins in Greece] - which is just as well as I'm getting a bit skint...

Here's one of my photos of Neil getting ready in Oswestry last Friday and another of the car park near the Saturday gig in Trefriw - I know...I just have a gift when it comes to photography

Saw Fionn Regan last night at Union Chapel. Only a short set as he'd been struggling with a sore throat all week but he was just fabulous. Such a talented young man. Looking forward to hearing his new album.

Went to Hamburg to see Whitney Rose in what turned out to be one of the smallest venues I've ever been in - must have held no more than 30, tops.

Mad gig week begins... went to see John Prine, supported, aided and abetted by Amanda Shires at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester last night. Glorious, as you'd expect - what I didn't expect, was more uptempo stuff and twang, which was very welcome.

Picture challenge accepted....

Tomorrow night it's Lynn Hanson & the Good Intentions in Biddulph.

Second gig of a five gig week - Lynne Hanson & the Good Intentions from Canada, playing at Biddulph Up In Arms - rootsy country and blues. Good hump-day music.

Tomorrow night it's Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons in Manchester - same night as the Manchester derby....
