Jealous - Pete's been tweeting photos of the pop up, lovely picture on the window of the store.

Local blues band played in St Lawrence's Church to kick off the Biddulph festival. Cry Baby & the Hoochie Coochie Boys played a mix of blues and more recent covers with considerable slickness. Great Friday night fun band. Coming up - Merrym'n album release show, Rachel Harrington, Hannah Aldridge, Chance McCoy and the Goat Roper Rodeo band (that's just one gig), The Mavericks and the Static Roots Festival in Oberhausen nr Dusseldorf.

Next up was the ultimate feel good band - The Mavericks at the Albert Hall in Manchester. It was a warm, sunny day, there was a pub next door to the venue (Orange juice only, but nothing wrong with that) and I met up with some good folks that i know for a pre-gig chat. The gig was two hours of latino country rock'n'roll and soul. Poor Raul is struggling with his ankle, but I hear that he's due an operation to sort it out later in the year. Next time I see the Mavericks will be in September - at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville...

Friday it was the album release show for fellow musical English teacher and Potteries' legend Merrym'n, supported by Nixon Tate and poet Nick Degg. (I'd taken the photos for the album and attendant publicity too) The launch took place in the Leopard in Burslem, a fantastic historic pub where Josiah Wedgwood and James Brindley met to discuss the building of the Trent & Mersey canal - one of the most haunted pubs in the city too.

Last Neil McSweeney Greystones Sheffield Thursday 27th June

First outing in a while for McSweeney and probably one of the best in the last nine [ish] years.

Next Ian McNabb Thornton Hough Wirral Saturday 13th July

Ian's local gig that has to finish at 10.30 because his Mam tells him it's time to go home...

Hannah Aldridge, Chance McCoy along with the Goat Roper Rodeo Band. A cracking summer's eve of Americana - the prog-trad of Chance McCoy, the punkish harmony-led enthusiasm of the Goat Ropers and the gothic southern country-rock sounds of Hannah Aldridge - it was all captured here too:

First time in an age that the gig was one best forgotten - caught him a while back and he was great - this time the continual stopping of songs as folks were not singing along loud enough was fun the first time but not by the fifth / sixth within the first of two sets - will not give up on him though he has written and continues to write some poetic tunes and has one hell of a vocal - here's to the next time.

Next Whitney Rose St Lawrence Church Biddulph Friday 19th July

Midweek I was at Biddulph Up In Arms for the Rachel Harrington gig - Rachel's a great character with a can do attitude - she's a hugely underrated finger picking guitarist too. Aided and abetted (and supported) by JD Hobson:

Then it was off to Germany for the Static Roots Festival. Founded by the extremely tall Dietmar Leibecke after visits to the Kilkenny Roots Festival, it's a two day festival based in a former zinc factory-cum-arts centre in Oberhausen, just outside Düsseldorf. Day 1, the Friday featured a scorching set from the enigmatic John Murry:

..and the day was topped off by some Allman Brothers type Americana from The Cordovas:

Day 2, on Saturday there was Ags Connolly:

The soulful Joe Nolan:

The twangy Latin sounds of Joanna Serrat (one of my highlights)
Image
The varied country-roots stylings of Don Gallardo (Not that these things should be ranked, but my favourite of the weekend):

Then it all ended with lots of banter, busked songs and chat until the early hours -and I came down with man flu...
Next gigs - Whitney Rose in Sheffield on Thursday and in Biddulph on Friday - after that, I'm waiting to see if I have got photo accreditation for Cambridge Folk Festival.

Two Whitney Rose gigs back to back - first was at the Hubs at Sheffield Hallam which wasn't the most populated gig I've been to recently but enjoyable nonetheless.
Image
The following night we'd got Whitney booked in Biddulph and the church was packed, which I was pleased/relieved about as I'd been nagging promoter mate Craig to put her on. Cracking night and Whitney ended up in the pulpit for her cover of "You don't own me".

Next up it's Josh Ritter in Glasgow, a mate's new band in Newcastle-under-Lyme the day after and then Cambridge Folk Festival - in an official photographic capacity!

I feature in the last photo by efsb - a little to the left of the lighting rig - in the darkness - reckon you got my best side.

Was a great night the openers could have been headliners - and the headliners provided a pretty much full on 'no nonsense' set that flew by in what seemed like half an hour but was actually a little under 90 minutes.

Next Long Strung Creatures @ The Salty Dog Northwich Sunday 28th July

Old school friends got this band together a few years back - playing their own music whilst also promoting gigs in the locality - have opened for Son of Man / Soft Machine / Wishbone Ash and the great Zal Cleminson's Sin Dogs - this time it's just them playing for the local Troggs / Greasers and Hairies...

Did an overnight trip to Glasgow to see Josh Ritter at Oran Mor - somewhat sweaty in an undergound venue on one of the hottest days of they year with no air-con. The venue kept the crowd supplied with water though, so credit to them. Josh always gives a value for money, enthusiastic show - depping guitarist Mark Erelli , who's a fine singer-songwriter in his own right was a revelation.
