i discovered last night to my horror that my record player has officially broke.

so folks....(i'm hoping someone here can help)...

i don't know much about them really...apart from they make music sound better :) so i'm definately going to have to buy a new one...

where the hell can you get them from nowadays!? my last one was a gift.

i'm from Derby and can travel to various neighbouring cities...

please help!

i've got about 150 quid which i don't mind chucking towards one.

CAN'T WAIT FOR TONIGHT :)

John Lewis have some turntables - and you can order on line.

Argos may as well.

Maplin have those USB ones.

am i right in thinking with a USB one i would be able to convert my vinyl into MP3 goodness?

is it wrong that the prospect of that excites me? hahaha

Yes, the USB one converts - and if you've got an iPod there are some that you can connect the iPod to and do the conversion straight on to the pod (and it copies off there to your PC when you next synch the pod).

You don't necessarily need a USB turntable - just need a cable to connect your amp to the computer and a copy of the audacity software - there's guides on-line about how to use it.

That said, I recently got USB one from Richer Sounds which is fine

Project make a decent range of turntables and are probably the best respected in the <£150 market. I think they also do a USB version but that might add a few more quids. As spt points out, you don't need a USB turntable to convert vinyl to MP3 (or whatever), you can just plug your turntable (or an output from your amp) into your computer and use audacity to do the conversion - you can download audacity for free.

It is a bit of a faff though (for me, for example, I have to unplug the turntable and lug it upstairs if I want to put a "proper" record onto the mp3 player.... And if you use the turntable without a pre-amp then you need to amplify the signal using audacity which adds time to the process. And there are various options for tweaking and tidying up the sound).

If I were you I'd consider whether you'd primarily be using your record player to play records ( :eh? ) or whether you'd want it mainly to digitise your collection. In other words how much the convenience of a USB turntable would be worth for your own circumstance. If you aren't going to use it much then you'd probably get better sound quality for simply playing records from a decent budget hifi turntable.

God that was a boring reply. Sorry everyone!

Here you go, free delivery and will come next day from my experience. For 150 quid this is a serious piece of kit that should last you much better than something from Argos ect.

I recently got a good deal on an ION USB turntable from www.djstore.com including overnight delivery. Seems very good quality and sound reproduction using Audacity software.

The other day I threw out the record player...........that my parents gave me for my 21st birthday.
I felt slightly sad as I chucked it into the skip.....................I mean it had given me endless hours of pleasure.....................doubt I will bother to replace it.............
