Thank you peps, very nice of you. I most admit to having been a miserable bitch about it – 47, jesus, who knew I'd be this old. Think, after years of avoiding anything resembling a mid-life crisis, that one is creeping up on me – that who thing of being more than half way through, mixed in with people I love getting older and not being here any more, and time making me look different than I think I do.

But the kids made a huge fuss of me, giving me cake and candles in bed (even though the 4 and 7 candles were put on in the wrong order so I blew out candles spelling 74), buying me old lady perfume and being really sweet. And my big boy, who rarely talks to me in words of more than one syllable these days, saved all his bits of money up to buy me chocolates.

And all my mates were very lovely and Maggie (who is such a good person) sending me a message about Rod in his thong and Billy Bragg's whiskers, made me laugh out loud, and you are all very lovely too, so I am considerably less miserable and I hope I haven't made anyone else miserable either.

If anyone has any tips on how to avoid having to dye my hair stupid colours/cry on the bus/wear inappropriately youthful clothing/shag the milkman or other typically mid-life crisis behaviour, do let me know. xxx

Helen being middle aged means you must dye your hair unless you want to look like a badger. I suggest rainbow colours. The slightly unhinged but delightful lady who owns our local knitting shop - the Wool Baa( obviously the place to be if you're a middle aged lady) literally has rainbow colour hair. I teach her granddaughter. I'm quite enjoying being in my fifties - people are much more forgiving!

Shouldn't you be thinking purple rinse at your age.

Mmmm. Purple. Sounds great. It'll match the veins in your cheeks. Xx

You are not quite there yet Helen but the thought of it is quite inspiring. Dye your hair different colours and then the tribal thing won't matter.
