Sadly Camera Obscura have announced that Carey passed away this morning. Here is the Facebook statment for those who can't see it. :(

It is with the greatest sadness, that we must share the news that Carey passed away peacefully this morning after her illness with cancer. We have lost our friend and band mate, and our deepest sympathy goes out to her partner Kenny, and to all her family and friends.

She was touched by the way you all got behind her campaign for Sarcoma UK and you can still donate here: https://www.justgiving.com/Carey-Lander

We shall be continuing to help promote the campaign on her behalf.

She was left in doubt how much you all loved and appreciated her, and we'd like to thank you all for the support and kind words you have been sending to us and her. The band, our music, and all of you who have enjoyed it over the years, meant so much to her.

Thank you all, Tracyanne, Gavin, Kenny and Lee x

She was so beautiful, talented, funny, wise and a barrel of witty sarcasm delivered with a gentle touch. She always looked cool as f""k too,I'll never forget her as long as I live she was simply an ace human being to be around......my love goes out to Traceyanne and the gang,to Kenny and to her family

"will these city streets remember us?we walked them long ago
blown apart by a bitter wind that took us far from home
and in the end its gossamer thin
and in the end there's nothing like a friend"

Rest in deep peace Carey xx

Love X your pal X

Anyone who had the pleasure of meeting her will concur with that. I'm really upset. So young too. So needless and cruel.

I'm not sure she had for a few years, but she used to post on here a way back.

For me Camera Osbscura will always be inextricably linked to Richard in many ways.

not least this cover https://youtu.be/Cb2SLKJ6xx8

Richard: how about covering a Camera Obscura song on your upcoming tour in tribute?

I’d learnt of Carey’s illness a few weeks back but hadn’t known how advanced or aggressive it turned out to be, so today’s news has been a real blow. My thought’s are with her family and friends.

A few years back I had been knocking about on here as had she and we sort of found a shared passion in Country music. Camera Obscura were touring at some point and Carey suggested I should say ‘hello’ if I went to a gig. Well I did, and she was kind enough to spare some time after what had been a great show and after lots of other fans had been asking for autographs. We had a great chat and I had taken along a couple of LP’s I thought she might like, one of which was by Bobbie Gentry. It’s to that singer I’m listening to tonight as the news sinks in.

I came back on here in the hope of finding some of the messages we exchanged, thankfully they have been saved for posterity. This is Carey after that chat....

“Hello, it was lovely to meet and you and thanks so much for the records!!!
I like Bobby Gentry a lot, we did a cover of Greyhound Going Somewhere once but I don't actually have any of her records. I am also a fan of John D. Loudermilk but I think it's just a best of cd I have, that album looks great. There was a Loudermilk record in the window of a record shop in New Zealand but I resisted because I'd already bought too many Skeeter Davis albums...
thanks so much, I can't wait to get home and listen”
carey x

This at least brings a smile to me today, for being a fond memory and recalling my disbelief that you could have too many Skeeter Davis albums. which she later happily acknowledged.

Sleep easy Carey.

I did something similar for a time earlier tonight.. Sought out a few old old PMs, forum exchanges and posts of hers and it raised a good few smiles.. I know she hasn't posted here for a good time but it was good to look back and appreciate her wit and warmth once again . Just a really nice nice girl... Cancer is a cunt...

I met Carey through this place. She came down to Sheffield and we spent an afternoon in Fagans with Richard. I guess this would have been around 2005. Afterwards we poured into a taxi and went back to Richard's house and carried on drinking. She came down to visit a few times after that, and she and my other half Michele travelled across to the Lowry to watch him play. He got them tickets for the box and referred to them throughout the concert as Statler and Waldorf. A few weeks ago Michele made a card for Carey and chose that scene for the cover.

In person she was astonishingly beautiful. Invariably dressed like she was in La Résistance, she looked like the world's most devasting librarian, as if Anna Karina had taken up residence behind the accessions' desk. There was some crystalline about her - not in a delicate way - but rather I mean to say that she was so immaculately measured. She was almost feline. Like the way a cat can tessellate into a bookshelf, she carried herself in much the same manner. She was witty but never cruel.

We shared a love of the poet Philip Larkin. Tonight there was a documentary about him on BBC Four. My first instict was to email Carey but this time there will be no reply.

The first day after a death, the new absence
Is always the same; we should be careful

Of each other, we should be kind
While there is still time.

So sad to hear this. At 33 she was still just a baby. Have been a huge fan of the group. Glad she is not suffering anymore. RIP Carey.

I met her a few times in Sheffield, we also chatted on here, PM'd.
Everyones said it already, she was a really top lass, time for everyone, intelligent, funny, really cool and very pretty.
She burned brightly and will fly high.

Gutted to get this news. Had to pop on here to pay my respects as here is how i met her. Absolutely top person with a wicked sense of humour and a passion for music. I'll remember slurring songs with her and getting drenched in guinness at fagans and chatting online here. Sad, sad news
