the working man's poet indeed, left us yesterday.

although he'd penned the reactionary "proud to be an okie from muskogee" and "the fighting side of me", he later commented that he'd woken up and realised that things like the vietnam war were lies, and further, declined to endorse republican separatist senator Wallace when some country acts joined his campaign trail.

a great teller of life's stories, here's a couple of big ones to be going on with, perhaps fellow fans can add their own faves.

i'm goin down my local folk club tonight to sing him home.

RIP indeed.easily maligned for Okie but much more complex than that and in a tradition of tough and open minded country singers

One of mine and my mom's very favorites. He and George Jones were the best there were.
