If you were a young kid in the 70s when Willy Wonka was re-released in theaters and first appearing on television, then the impression Gene Wilder made on you basically informed your whole life in a profound way that would sound silly if you tried to put it into words. But my fellow Gen Xers who also saw that movie for the first time when it was still new, you know what I'm talking about. We internalized more about how to strive to be a good person from that one performance, than we did from a whole lot of other sources--familial and institutional--that tried their best to shape us. That seems about right. Thank you for everything, Gene, we love you and we will never forget you.
