I was the only Elvis fan in my school as well (or so it seemed).... got the mickey taken out of me something chronic around the time that he died...............

No wonder I only keep in touch with one schoolmate these days! :*:

I was 11 when Elvis died and it had a huge effect on me. I'd been listening to all my Dad's old 78's for a while and was totally hooked on 50's rock n roll especially Gene Vincent, Buddy Holly and of course Elvis. I used to play the 78s at 16 to try and work out the words to Jailhouse Rock so Elvis dying was of huge significance to me. I loved his music then and even more so now I've heard more of it.

If Johnny Cash hadn't kippered it when he did a few years back you wouldnt even be having this debate. It's only in his death that a new generation have discovered his legacy. I love JC's stuff to bits but they did different stuff and occasionally strayed into each others genre. Elvis was shit from 1969 onwards, JC produced some of his best stuff in his last years, but at the end of the day EP was 'The King'.......and he died on me birthday! This thread is daft, why dont you just have 'Whats best....Rock n' Roll or Country????

Another man after my own heart............... Hissyt, Paul and Luckyman - we have some people with SUCH good taste on here!!

Of course we all have some taste - after all we're all here for Richard but this is the icing on the cake as it were.......... :D 8)

Strangely I don't have either J.C or EP records (although I do have an old JC double LP which was my dads)..I'll need to get around to buying both someday..For purely a seismic cultural impact of iconic dimensions, I'll say it again there is only one
ELVIS :king:

i have 45 elvis LP's :D

i was working behind a post office counter the day Elvis died, I fashioned a black arm band from the plastic bands round wads of brand new tenners, the Post master made me remove it

I think JC stood for certain things that are probably more valuable than those Elvis stood for, truth, Humanity, he sang of life as it was, and the everyday bravery and dignity needed to get through, Elvis' world was illusary, but it sparkled brightly and we always wanted to return, and we wanted him to lead us there, which probably lead, in part to his downfall

I like your wording Episle - about Elvis' world sparkling and wanting to be lead by him, partly leading to his downfall. I had never thought of it that way before but I think its true.
