Strangely I don't have either J.C or EP records (although I do have an old JC double LP which was my dads)..I'll need to get around to buying both someday..For purely a seismic cultural impact of iconic dimensions, I'll say it again there is only one

That's too bloody hard.

I listen to JC more though so......

Reluctantly I think I have to side with Johnny on this one.

not wishing in any way shape or form to diminish the greatness that is Johnny Cash, but when I hear Hound dog I'm flying, & I don't ever want to come back down

if ii knew how to vote I'd vote for the king

Elvis for me. Those early Sun records are never far from me and as Erpisle says, Hound Dog......phew!!! Elvis made some great pop records as well - Maries The Name (Of His Latest Flame) stands out for me and had a feel for blues that I don't think Johnny Cash brought to the stage. Those late sixties records have an emotional intensity and style that takes some beating - I'm thinking of the Memphis sessions stuff. Elvis died when he was very ill and not up to producing anything new and inventive and because of that never got out a slump with another "comeback". He packed in a huge amount to a short life and had to cope with things in a way Cash didn't.

I adore Johnny Cash and hold the two great prison records in the same sort of esteem as I do the Elvis Sun sessions. Certainly Johnny Cash was a good songwriter and brought a sense of integrity to his music - he had "credibility" before that was something people were bothered about.

It's hard though to compare a man who died aged 40 with a man who died aged 71. Cash had some troughs as well as Elvis and could perform with a similar schlocky style when the Rhinestones demanded it but age afforded him the opportunity to dig deep again. Who's to say Elvis wouldn't have revived again if he had lived?

In the end though it's pure excitement that does it for me and that's Elvis.

I might shock a few here, but I've got to go for Elvis even though I'm not a huge fan of his. He was the King of Rock & Roll and there was no one to touch him circa 1956 -58. So much of what we hold dear these days would not have happened if it wasnt for EP. Heartbreak Hotel was such a groundbreaking record at the time and as the cliche goes 'inspired a generation' and if you're honest with yourselfs, you all know a lot more Elvis songs than Johnny Cash songs.

Just checked:

Elvis songs on the i-pod: 180
Johnny Cash on the i-pod: 186

Cash shades it.

I don't either. Most of the elvis songs I could name are the ones which have JD Sumner in them.
