I first saw Richard at this venue in 2008 - Our Darkness blew me away. It inspired me to join this forum and my car still has the dent i got by a badly placed rusty pole!

I'm not sure about the Venue, I haven't been there, I have been to The Apollo, Bridgewater Hall, MEN and GMex. Is it O.K? I might go to Derby instead on the Monday night and make a long weekend if I can get the time off work, not that I have been to the venue there either. :?

It's certainly nicer than Gmex and the Arena but it's somewhere I only go if I'm absolutely desperate to see the band in question.

I know Hawley and Co will sound pretty spectacular anywhere but I've been to too many gigs there with horrible muddy sound and even more horrible disinterested audiences. I'm sure the Hawley collective will raise the tone though.

Maybe it'll sell out in two minutes and we'll get an upgrade to the Apollo :D

i agree it's a rubbish room, but the last one they did there sounded fantastic. the ocean was the biggest i heard it on that tour.

mike timm, richard's live sound engineer is a genius and i've never heard anyone get a better sound (for example) in the bridgewater hall which is notoriously shite.

That's very true - full bands in the Bridgewater usually sound like mush but RH in 2009 sounded spectacular.

The more I think about it, the harder it is to think of a decent theatre-sized venue in Manchester. Even the Apollo can sound terrible.

The nicest sounding gigs I've heard in bigger venues:

Neil Young - Apollo
Hawley - Bridgewater
Joanna Newsom - Palace (very surprised at this)

er, that's it.

Don't suppose we could get him to block book the Deaf Institute for a month instead? :D

the old victorian theatres are usually good and have an atmosphere about them
and in contrast, the sage in gateshead which has an impeccably clear sound, is strangely soulless.

my fave in mancland is the opera house.
but as you can see below i have a fondness for the great free trade hall

I only saw one band at The Opera House - Mott The Hoople in 73 - trying to think of the last band I saw at Manchester FTH - probably Talking Heads in about 79 / 80 - when did it close - <off to find out> - I kind off left Manchester in about 81.

I forgot about the Opera House! Saw Leonard Cohen on two of the four dates he played there a few years ago - looked and sounded great.

Far too young to have been to the FTH, I think. First gigs I went to were in 1995 - was it still a going concern then?

Which reminds me, the first shows I ever went to were at the Boardwalk - a great lost venue - think I saw the Longpigs supporting Ash or someone like that there.

What's The Ritz on Whitworth Street like? Saw the La's there a few years back and it seemed ok. Had a cool sprung dance-floor as well. I can just imaging the new album being belted out and all us punters vibrating along.

aye, the ritz is an old dancehall, but not very classy anymore. i saw sharon jones there a year ago. ace. good sweaty gig when it's full.

Off to The Ritz to see Ian Hunter come October - only 39 years or so since I saw him play the Opera House :shock:

The FTH closed in 96 - I'm still looking to see when the last gig was played there...
