Safe to say he's a big influence? Started listening to some of his stuff (and the wilbury's ) properly the last 2 days. His songs just always seem to have been around, without anyone in my home being a fan really. Now i'm older i can begin to really appreciate him, his voice especially.

Anyway, is he a significant influence, and could you point me in the direction of his noteworthy stuff?

I know this was intended for Mr H, but as a huge fan of Roy, you can pick up any number of collections of his greatest hits in the high street and would be hard pressed to find a bad song. The only thing I would look out for would be re-recordings - try to find the originals where possible. I've also noticed a range of CD releases from Edsel records which feature two of his original studio albums on one disc - they're well worth checking out, I've found a few hidden gems that way.

Also, I'd highly recommend the DVD "Black and White Night" where Roy and a host of big name musicians play a full set of his classic tunes.

If all else fails, PM me and I'll give you a list of my favourite tunes that you can look for on itunes or something like that. :)

Happy hunting!

'Pretty Woman', 'Only the Lonely', 'In Dreams', 'Blue Angel'.............are just some of his classics I love............all powerful songs!!!.............one to look for is 'Pretty One'............................its got the usual tinge of saddness.............but the big "O" sings it really cool.................. 8)

The eighties re-recordings weren't bad at all, though they don't compare with the original versions.

There's something about Dream Baby that gets me every time

And yes Black and White Nights is great - loads of people on there, including Bruce Springsteen.

Indeed. I have the very same one. 2 discs, one for A-sides and the other for B-sides I believe. Great CD.

he wrote some of the most haunting and impassioned songs of all time, "crying" is a special personal fave of mine.

'Cry Softly Lonely One'... when he sings "cry, cry to me girl" his voice is just beautiful he really hits the note.

I'd love to hear Mr. H cover this track.

I agree, what a huge loss, i´ve always prefered Roy Orbison to Elvis.
