he would have been 80 this month, not that his lifestyle was ever gonna help him get to that milestone but he was a character and a true talent when he wanted to be. I only have a best of and a couple of other bits and pieces but he's somone who I defo want to check out a bit more in time.

I saw an elsebound train, on the overpass
In the driving rain, every ticket costs the same
For where you can't go
Mustang horses, champagne glasses
Anything frail anything wild
It's the price of living motion, what's beautiful is broken
And grace is just the measure of a fall.

i prefer his earlier, 50's chanson material to the later stuff with cheesy 80s synths etc :( but he was a completely unique artist and man. Melody Nelson is a great great record.

Yes he really was something special.
I'm sure I read in the paper a while back, that part of his Parisian Apartment is going to be made into a sort of museum.................Only it is going to be untouched, meaning it will be how he left it.
Brimming ashtrays, score sheets and other Gainsbourg paraphenalia...............................imagine how interesting that would be.
I love that film to Ballade de Melody Nelson......with him walking about smoking, everyone knows it's bad for you....but it looks so cool.......................Great Stuff.

nail on the head there. 'lemon incest' par example!

there's a great 2DVD boxset which gives the full overview of serge (including the full video version of "histoire de melody nelson") from the 50s to his death.

Maybe this thread could be moved to songs or culture since we all are giving our opinion! anyways,

mmmm not sure about this "museum".
the appartment of rue de verneuil has some mystery about it. the front was covered with graffities dedicated to serge (when he was still around). most of the appartment walls were black. dark atmosphere.
he had a Sid vicious photo on his piano for some reason.

music wise yes, the 80 s stuff sounds.. different (american sound, musicians...) but i still like it.
he was mixing french and english in his lyrics and was most of the time very funny (very sex orientated).
I recommend the reggae album he did with the wailers aux armes etc..
was llucky enough to see him live on his last tour.

In any case he was miles above the sea of criminals against music we have and still breed in our dear home country. We plead guilty....
