Just got the new Robert Forster CD and there is some really moving songs on it. I think the best song on the album 'Demon Days' was one of the last songs Grant McLennan started to compose before his untimely death in 2006. Were you a fan or did you ever tour with the Go Betweens? |

we did indeed tour with them,i got on very very well with grant and was very upset by his passing,i dedicated a song every night to him on the tour we did around that time.It was such a shock he is very much missed i actually played with them with my 12 string electric in Germany when we supported them a few years ago,they were all of them great people and a very talented bunch too |

That evening in Bielefeld years ago (was it 2003?) was one of the best gigs I've been to. It was the last show of the Go-Betweens' tour then, and it was he first time I saw you playing live. I remember Grant was very pissed off with the monitor sound and told the guy at the mixing desk several times (but always with his certain smile) he would go deaf if he continued cranking up the volume like that. Nevertheless they played a full two hours set with loads of encores. Last one was "He lives my life" with you on the green Baldwin 12 string. Fantastic! I've never met Grant on a personal level, but talked to Robert once years ago. But when Grant died, it really made me cry. Partly, because of the tragedy; partly, because - I assume - his personality shone through his songs, his live appearance and so on all those years. To me it always felt like Grant and Robert were "the odd couple" of pop. A unique chemistry. There's some great footage on the DVD "That striped sunlight sound" where they both are sitting in Robert's living-room talking and playing. And with Adele and Glenn, it seemed that they formed a perfect band of great people: just look at their faces when they were playing together. Some songs on Robert's album "The Evangelist" give me goose-pimples. I'm glad he took the courage to make it. And I hope he continues, moving on. |

i really like the go-betweens. i remember when grant died it was such a shock - id been watching their dvd a couple of nights before. he always seemed such a lovely bloke - modest as well - and robert too. at the end of the dvd he says somethin like 'the future's so bright i need to wear shades'. it seemed so poignant

I have a dusty old 7" somewhere of the gobetweens on postcard, think it's "2 heads" or some'int but never listened 2 anything after. Is it worth giving them a listen and if yes where to start? |

I've loved the Go-Betweens since the 80s – definitely worth a listen, imho. I prefer the music they made then to the later stuff made after they got back together a few years ago. Springhill Fair, Liberty Belle & the Black Diamond Express and Tallulah are all good. I thought I remembered reading something about Richard on the Go-Betweens forum but after a fruitless search I remembered it was on the Triffids' (another great Australian band) site http://thetriffids.com/forum/index.php?topic=528.15 – the poster (Cassiel) is talking about seeing RH at Shepherds Bush in 2006: For the encore he did a spine-chilling verson if Long Black Veil, then launched into rockabilly versions of Mystery Train and That's Alright Mama, which fitted perfectly. Reiterating what Adam wrote in another thread about Grant Mclennan's reach, he dedicated one song to him (You Don't Miss Your Water) and said what a good bloke he was, or rather, 'We got fuckin' pissed a lot with each other.' Adele Pickvance, he said, sent him a text after Grant's death. Apparently GW [sic] learned a few phrases from our Richard, and right to the end of his life walked around saying, 'That's fucking boss.' Not sure whether he put on the Sheff accent.

bless him our grant was a top bloke very funny guy to hang about with,Adele was ace too,glad to see Robert is writing and releasing stuff again too |
