There seems to be a certain 'presence' about your recordings, Richard, something I can't quantify exactly. Something which brings the voice right into the room. A very clean sound. Is this simply a feature of modern production technique, or something you particularly went after?
...Or am I just showing my ignorance here? :?

I think there's something in the way Richard enunciates his words - like on The streets ... very clearly, '.... the streets are ours ...' which sloppier singers would somehow lose making for a more garbled sound?
But willing to admit it could be some fabulous technical stuff.

Still shows he's a good singer. you can mask bum notes in overdubs. was anyone watching the pink floyd documentaries n telly last night? they isolated some of the vocal tracks and dave gilmore sounded kind of weak. but its masked by the heaps of other stuff going on. so hats off to hawley ;)

well gilmore is good but never had a particularly "strong" voice - he is a guitarist first and foremost.

Bernard Sumner shouldn't work in theory; his voice isn't the best, he's barely competent on the guitar, his lyrics can be awful and New Order are the biggest hit and miss live act this side of Salford Market. But somehow they are effing ace and I love them with a passion.
Funny that.

A Joe Meek influence perhaps, mixing a close over EQ'd voice mixed with a distant overdub, a Meek trick but maybe not revelant in this instant.
