Yep it's about a real bloke called Percy Topliss, who used to impersonate army officers and was a bit of a rogue. There's now some debate about whether he was actually at the mutiny at Etaples but he certainly became linked with it and took on a mythical role. It's incredibly interesting, particularly how much authority tries to hide dissent.

I went out to Northern France last year to take some pictures. It's incredible how much evidence is left, 90 years on. You'd think that nature would have obliterated all or most of the physical legacy of the war but almost everywhere you turn there are slightly odd and unnerving marks on the landscape - old trench lines, shell craters and in the Autumn the 'metal harvest; turns up many unexploded shells. I'd urge anyone to take a trip there, a very thought provoking place.

Your pictures are very thought provoking Simon................it seems nature wants to keep a constant reminder of the terrible devastation of war.........................

There have been some fascinating programmes on BBC4 this week - more scheduled I think - and on normal terrestrial TV next week too.......including a Time Team special or something.
