From Radio Times – My People by Stuart Maconie
Our Friend in the North
I’ve been making a documentary for Radio 4 about male friendships in the North. To get some insights into this I crossed the Pennines over the Snake Pass to Sheffield recently to see a friend of mine, Richard Hawley. In his music, and his general attitude, Richard embodies that winning blend of the tough and tender. We spent several hours in the social club that adjoins his house and mused on the nature of mates. I recorded one of the links for the show on the return journey which, if you are kind enough to listen, will explain the thick strain of manly emotion in my delivery (Stuart Maconie, Tuesday 21 July 1 pm 6 Music)
