Went to see the film in Liverpool on Saturday - serious, thought-provoking drama. There’s an oxymoronic theme running throughout the film, from the title to how the titular character deals with life’s pain and joy. Don’t want to sound too pseudish, but it reminded me of the Samuel Beckett idea that all life is pain and we do stuff to shut out that pain. There are lots of taboos put out there in the film and I guess there will be some critics who fail to grasp the varied reasons why that is. Maxine Peake is tremendous - I’ve already seen a quotation from one review that says that the film is her “Raging Bull” and that’s no easy clickbait comparison - she really is that good. In some ways this is very much in the tradition of the 60s kitchen sink dramas like “A kind of loving” - only much stronger and more powerful. I was expecting a good film - it’s a great one.

I'm looking forward to the film, especially after those comments, Nick. Particularly into the kitchen sink dramas & that rare thing - the British made film, set in Britain.

Really looking forward to seeing this, now. Beckett in the Kitchen Sink - sounds like they made it just for me!

Eeeee...well finally booked tickets for Monday 18th June evening show in Manchester and it looks like we have the place to ourselves...wonder why?

Update : don't know what I was expecting but that wasn't it - even with efsb's Beckett warning I was taken aback by the brutality - came away walking on a cloud tho' - always good to see those with conviction win against the odds - just wish the Triumph Stag had featured more tho'
