Hi Richard. Saw a clip of you on the TV recently in a rehearsal studio and it looked like you were using a Sennheiser mic. I love your vocal sound and whilst I realise a lot of it is the actual tonal qualities of your voice, I am wondering what mic you use for actual recording or does it vary track to track or album to album? I am sure there are also some wonderful valve compressors, mixer channels and so forth. Could you just give me some hints as to your vocal chain? i am sure I couldn't afford it but maybe I can emulate it in software and see what it does to my somewhat less worthy voice :)

got to confess to being a little pissed of to discover that one of my favourite vocal recordings is done with what looks very much like a Sennheiser 835s. Why? Because I have one of those and went and bought a large diaphragm mic thinking it would improve the sound, cost what to me is an arm and a leg too! Now it looks like I shall return to the Sennheiser and play with that. Has Mike Timm ever done any interviews about the methods he uses when recording your voice?

Hi,

It's a Sennheiser e845 that's seen in that session. That's the mic I use for Richard live at the moment. If I remember rightly it's through a Neve 1073 preamp and into my custom made Urei 1176 replica, so the preamp and eq cost something in the order of 20 times the price of the mic!

The sound comes from Richards voice and sounds great on my neumann U87, KM84, my studio projects B1 (as heard on wading through the waters) or the sennheiser, so I'm afraid to say it's not really due to the gear used at all.

Thanks for the info. I'm not really trying to emulate him exactly it's more like tweaking things in that direction and coming up with something completely different. Bit like how the Beatles tried to play Tamla and came up with their sound. Its just pointing the sonics in a particular direction. My biggest challenge is really how loose and live can I be without sounding so amateurish as to be dismissed as totally amateur. It is even more challenging in my case as I play everything and have Parkinsons disease which makes it F***in dificult to keep in time. If you ask non-musicians they often say it sounds great...musicians on the other hand....

Just re-read this and clocked that you were asking about the mic used for recording :oops:

I mostly can't take any credit for that as the majority of the album recordings were done by Colin Elliot. I think he uses a Neumann U87 usually but I'm sure he'd agree with me that the gear is only the last 1% of the sound.
