Just a thought - if you can enhance the name that is on the building behind the two chaps - you can look in one of the trade directories from around 1905 and find out where they were based?

I can't make it out but I'm sure you'll be able to - it could be an advert for something else of course, but its worth a try!

I still think it was the 1905 alternative to 118 118 ...A Personalised Care Call Centre where the operator comes a calling on you in person with the telephone number you require ... anyone can see the man with the moustache has a telephone directory in his hand !!.. ;)

Been searching around the internet looking for gas holders in Sheffield. Mainly come up with ones that have already been posted :? Apparently there are two main types of gas holder. The one in the picture is a rigid framed type. The actual holder falls & rises within the framework, according to the volume of gas inside. Most of the pictures I found show the other type, which does not have a frame, but 'telescopes' on a helix. I wonder if the one shown might have been replaced by the latter type on the same site, and therefore that could still be the same location, whilst looking slightly different. I guess those chimneys are long gone too

Thanks for the idea of the advertising billboard in the background. Alas, I can't read a thing on it. I've tried to rescan it two times, but both times the image was the same ie ilegable...though I'm open to the 'ales' bit!

Though, what I have found is some writing the front of the book of the older looking guy in the photo. The trouble is, Victorian era handwriting for myself is very hard to read. Let alone some blurred image of it.

The full scan is here.

I really love these old portraits. Pidgeons.

I guess this guy lives next door and doesn't mind his neighbors pigeons crapping all over his roof. These two shots where taken from the box of High Green.

I couldn't make out the writing on the book but i recon you could if you put the photo into negative. The contrast would be much greater thus easier to read :)

I think Richard is in about the right area Neepsend Lane Parkwood Road up to the Tip and Parkwood springs, The gas holders were taken down a good few years back I was working for the tanker firm who had the job of taking all the old black sludge away Nice ! They made a fortune

Towers could be from the old brewery which i think was in the area

Thank you for posting, great photos and so strange to see Lady's Bridge 1905. I'm lucky to get to work with old photos and portraits from early 1900 are so rare - usually we get in tiny photos where the focus is on the house and the people will be unsharp down in a corner, but the portraits on page 1 are just fantastic!

i have done a little bit of research and that photo of the arches on Lady's bridge is probably taken on the 12th july 1905,Edward v11 and Queen Alexandra came here to open the university, the arches were built to commemorate the occassion
