this Friday. Another proper record shop bites the dust. Also the end of not being charged the earth if you want to buy a gig ticket.

Was surprised this hadn't come up on here already.

Jack is a miserable fecker though.

Its a loss, but if the rumours of Fopp reopening in Sheffield are true then it seems a decent trade off.

Fopp (as saved by The Piss Flaps) is opening where Yates used to be on Division Street.

Ian from Jacks is somewhat misunderstood i think. Seen him out at gigs a couple of times and he's always been sound.

Will be good to have a cheap CD shop back, though it's no substitute and i fear it'll be a shadow of it's former self. I'm sure there are some people who'll not be too pleased it's back at all as there were quite a few local acts were owed money by them when the original incarnation went tits up.

There was an opening party for FOPP in the frog and parrot on sunday - Although it didnt state where the new one would be..

Although Jacks was not perfect I did buy a lot of 7" 50's 60's vinyl in there. Its still a proper record ahop which sadly fopp wont be - it will be CD's and smiles

Very much a man of two halves is Ian. Taciturn at best, surly, snappy and downright rude at worst - when in shop mode - but a generally pleasant bloke out of hours. Almost the acme of the stereotypical snotty record shop geezer. The pressures of running a struggling business in an expensive part of town must get to one I would have thought. Most of the people running these kind of shops aren't doing it for the vast heaps of dough though and it is a genuine shame to see the shop go. Hope it goes well for Ian and all.

i am sad to say the least Ian is a good man,i worked there for a while when it was across the other side of the road.I thought it ironic that on the front cover of the telegraph they had a picture of the crowd at tramlines which was pretty huge and a picture of ian in his music shop that was closing due to lack of interest in music

People who download have a lot to answer for. That's what is fucking up music, particularly record shops, especially the generation who don't expect to have to pay for music anymore.

Never downloaded a thing, not intending to start now.

personally I dont have a problem with downloading as long as you PAY for it!! i like the convenience of saying.... "oooh I fancy X" and being able to purchase it from itunes - however there is NOTHING...HEAR ME NOTHING!!!! like holding a record! - even a cd is cool but a RECORD..!

I have decks at home but my fav is still my little dansette in the front room... my kids LOVE IT!!! and they love the fact they actually have to place a little bit of plastic on the turntable..then stack up the 45's (usually including little egypt - elvis, the clapping song - shirley ellis and great balls of fire!) then dance... then rush over to see the next one drop!!....

you just dont get that with an mp3... :(

yep - my eldest daughter loves it too - she got to choose a 7" in Jacks (Blondie, natch), am just hoping Record Collector holds on long enough for the younger one to do the same.

Raided Jack's vinyl back catalogue last week with a heavy heart - I've been making the effort to get stuff from them for the last year or so rather than ordering over the web.

Guy who runs it (ran it...)might be the smiliest, but often at gigs and clearly supporting local bands.

Sad to see Happy Jacks go. I've spent a small fortune in there over the years.

It was my favourite shop in Sheffield for vinyl and decently priced as well. I thought the guy who ran it was alright, he just didn't smile very much.
