Got involved in a little chat with me grandad the other day, all very reminiscent and nostalgic, but funny nonetheless. We got on about interviews and jobs, so that was his signal for the rambling to commence!
All the following to be imagined in one of the most broad Sheffield 'Sheffald' as he calls it, accents ever..
He said he was 14 when he left school and went for an 'interview' down at Cravens on Staniforth road, Darnall (knocked down now for housing sadly).
He sauntered in sheepishly and went into an office where a tall bloke stood and simply said, 'Can tha start munday son?'
Me grandad said, 'Aah'.
That's when he told me he started that monday morning at 6 o'clock, and dint finish until 6 o'clock Friday 14th March, 2001!
chuckles all round.
Being 19 and living in this day and age, it seems a harsh prospect working for fifty-odd years somewhere like that, but he just said, 'that's what people had to do'
Puts things into perspective from my point of view anyway.
Looking forward to the next dose of nostalgia/education/banter over a brew with the told lad.
