Oh dear... I handed over a £20 note today for a few things that came to about £5 & I was asked, "Don't you have anything smaller?" I said, "If I did, I'd probably use that, really, wouldn't I?"

I know I shouldn't snap at them, but it's common sense. She shoved my purchases into a carrier bag with quite unnecessary force

If it ever happens again, do what I do, take the twenty pound note fold it in half, then in half again then hand it back.

and bloody hell, another flying tangent award for this thread. SO fellas, how do you moisturise? i'm a taylors of bond street shaving cream myself followed by a bit of oil of ulay.

Well, having been on the other side of this MANY times - allow me to explain why we say that. The vast majority of time people do actually have change. If we ask, it means we don't have to give out £19.40 change for a newspaper and so don't run out of change quicker in the week and therefore have to pay for a new change delivery from securicor. :)

In my shop at least, we ask politely, and if refused, we remain polite.... and then call you names when you walk out the door. ;) :*:

Well, logical as that is, I know I don't have anything smaller. I'd rather not piss you (& co) off too, but if I had something closer to the actual price I'd use it.

I know, I'm a moaning get :*:

 Have to admit I do hand over larger notes when I have the right money. But that's because I need to break the note so I'll have the £1 coins for bus or parking or because I don't want the hassle of trying to hand over scottish notes in England ... or because I'm hoping I'll get £2 coin in the change and then it goes in my 'holiday pot' .... other days I'm really annoying because I try to make up £3.89 in coins and count out all the 20p 5p and 2p coins accumulated ...
