Somebody I know told me the other day that he probably won't play the guitar anymore...because he's 'outgrown music'......................What the hell does that mean?

Incidentally this guy went in his bedroom at 14 taught himself the guitar, and played professionally for 20 years...allbeit in a tinpot tribute band...................)

I don't know I can sort of relate to that.

I think it's called age! I'm nowhere as near as passionate about music as I was. I've just got into other things.

Same here - I still absolutely love music, but trying to making a living from it is downright depressing at times. I don't think i'll be doing it when i'm 40.

I guess I thought it odd that someone would want to give up something ,that they had taken years to master..............................

It's just that musicians are up against so many barriers - the fact that you've spent years doing it, isn't worth a shit to many. Doing something else you don't really care for but surviving is perhaps less agonizing than doing something you love but constantly being told 'no'.

Yeah Rich , but I bet your a better and a more mature artist for all this, could have been worse, an apperance on a "Talentless" show like "Opportunity Knocks" and the modern equivalent "Dustman man does Euorvision" my arse ,you've created your own signature and bloody good luck, the music buisness is full of shit, money rules always did, and always will. The *"Parnes Shillings and Pence" type bleeding the young talent, but it won't, as in all business.... stop the talent coming through.

I disagree! It takes justified self belief

I've often wondered how premier league football would work if it adopted the methods of the music business. :*:

I really don't get the concept of "to outgrow music". I don't want to quote that John Miles, but for me it would be like giving up eating, drinking, smoking, loving, talking and whatyouwant all simultaneously.

I've been playing in bands for 30 years and I know that if you think of earning a living out of music it's a completely different idea. I've stayed an amateur (which means you just love it!) though I could have taken "opportunites" at one time years ago. Still I need an audience every other month - not (only) for my ego :*: , but because I think making music, songs etc. is meant to be heard, and each recording or gig is a proposal of communication and coming together.

A speccy bloke once told me that Scott Walker said something like "you shot an arrow, now follow its course." ..>

Amen. :*:

I can't grasp that one either, as a music fan rather than a player I can still relate to that quote
Quote:

. Sometimes in life circumstances change where music, either playing or listening to music, going to gigs etc. becomes less of a priority either through changes in family or work life, certainly when I changed over to nights last year that was the case. I just didn't have the energy or lust for life in general and found myself listening to less and less music and missing gigs that in the past if I couldnt get time off to go to would erm, suddenly develop a strong cough at least over the phone when I'd call in. Anyway on days now , alls well loving music and discovering new music especially, 4 gigs lined up this week and never felt better. Hate to think music wouldnt be such a biig part in my life as it is now

I saw an elsebound train, on the overpass
In the driving rain, every ticket costs the same
For where you can't go
Mustang horses, champagne glasses
Anything frail anything wild
It's the price of living motion, what's beautiful is broken
And grace is just the measure of a fall.
