Hey, my first ever post in the Rant forum :) (I must be an extremely well balanced individual :*: )

Received a mailing in the post this morning 'inviting' me to an Elton John gig. No problem there, thanks very much but not really my thing...

Then I noticed the ticket price.

£230

That's right, two hundred and thirty of your English pounds. For a gig.

But wait - how very cynical of me. You get a 'Rocket Man' cocktail on arrival.

That's alright then...

Sheesh

He always seems to leech off who's popular at any particular given time - Ryan Adams/Eminem/Rufus Wainwright/blah, blah, blah just being another in a long line of 'who's hip this year'. Wiggy's not released anything passable for well over 30 years and then gets on stage with the current big seller just to boost sales of his latest 'greatest hits' release - the whole Princess Diana thing has been a financially canny move for wiggy and his flower supplier. I can't get over that he's used the tragic death of someone to further a stagnant career - and he constantly plays up to it and is accepted by his fans; if it wasn't for Diana, he couldn't ask £230 a ticket.

I saw footage of him at the last Diana memorial concert - the screen behind the band just showed a montage of images of him from over the years. That with the 'tiaras and tantrums' programme showed him to be a self obsessed cnut.

Sorry, but I can't stand him.

Not that I'm going to defend him or his narcissitic behavior, but I always perceived that some of this is that younger artists cover or attach themselves to his music (I mean he did do some things that like it or not became iconic of the 70s - at least here in the states) and he steps into the spotlight with it. Doesn't mean he isn't being opportunistic or isn't a bit of a "me me me" whore, but I think it goes both ways more than people give credit for. I can't imagine what it's like to be as famous and on top of it all as he was and to age (not gracefully) and not have anything new working for him but not be ready to quit. Who knows what kind of neurosis that brings up.

We enjoyed the Elton John gig in Perth, the performance was great, but I did feel it was done on 'auto-pilot' - no real engagement with the crowd, and a gratuitious nod to Scotland at one point. Give me Hawley banter any time.
