“I don’t want to go on much longer, really," he told Filter. "I think that would suggest a lack of imagination. A certain lack of dignity also. There has to reach a point where you’ve said enough, I think.”

Everyone entitled to an opinion - but the broad brush stroke of 'lack of imagination - lack of dignity' - cuts deep when applied to the journey men [women] who carried their music and creativity throughout their lives and to the grave...

Thren again its probably Mozza being Mozza - he'll be on a farewell tour with Tina Turner in 2099...

It's a strange statement considering his admiration for such artists as Sinatra, Distel and even Elvis who all continued to do what they did despite trends and movements and sounds.
A move into torch-song balladery would suit Morrissey to the ground, and would increase his longevity - although he has expressed a disliking of simply going on for the sake of it - and perhaps the guitar driven pop he has been making of late would have to be softened to sit more comfortably with his advancing years but he can, and will, continue until the grave.........
The dusty old book shop will have to wait

Not a Morrisey fan generally though I always think he's very funny. The last couple of times I have seen him on things he has seemed bland - not something I'd level at him across his career and rather overblown (I expect and accept any brickbats).......so for me it mightn't be a bad idea if he packed in!

Equally, I think he is a long way from the person who might at one time in his life fancied a dusty bookshop somewhere cold and northern

the three artists you mentioned Alf all did cover versions of songs written by other people,to be the one writing and motivating yourself can sometimes be hard as you get older,i haven't hit that point just yet but maybe he just wants to have a happy life?i wish the man the best personally i think he has done some of the best music on earth over the years

Well, he's clearly fed up with it so good for him.

Isn't it like anyone else who wants to retire! Fair play if that's what he wants to do!

As long as i've got my Smiths b/cat & mozza's solo stuff i'll still be happy, new material is a bonus but he's done some magnificent stuff in the past so i'll be happy for him to hang up his boots & get his slippers on.
God bless you Morrissey, tho do an odd interview from time to time, they are greatly entertaining.

I hope that he does not give up but if he does he has left us with an absolutley amazing back catalogue that will keep us all happy for years.

This thread is also being discussed on Morrisseysolo but it is very hard to have an intelligent discussion on that sight without someone biting your head off, some serious idiots on that site which is a pity because it is great for Moz news.

That's a good point, and one which I was hopelessly trying to make......they are all performers, which I believe Morrissey is - he has written his own songs, but may now have lost the inspiration, urge, motivation etc. to continue penning odes to the lovelorn, yet with his vast back catalogue and a selection of covers he could continue to perform live for many years to come.

I just hope he will make to Killarney/Galway first in April before he decides to ride off into the sunset.

well i reached that point after the Longpigs,i was so fucked off with it all i very nearly packed it in cos i just couldn't hack the shallowness of the music industry but decided to have one last go with what i REALLY wanted to do all along, glad i did now.I know loads of musicians who get fed up with it its natural really this industry is full of shit and it doesn't take long for it to piss off the more sensitive of us.My advice, although i am sure it isn't wanted or needed is to go and have a long long break.......you will find out very soon if its still in you.

he's contributed so much amazing music over the years which have enriched the lives of many so if he did deceide to retire good look to him, he's done his bit and will leave some fucking legacy. Its very unusual these days to come accross anyone making popular music who is real and walks to the beat of their own drum like he has, rather than cowtowing to some market demographic. Good luck to him whatever but hopefully he'll continue making great music, can't wait to hear the new album tomorrow.

if anyone is still after tickets for manchester and they live in the leeds area, cavendish travel (0113 2441919) are doing tickets and travel from leeds for about £67 i think. beats paying the touts inflated prices and you get ferried there and back.

the radio 2 free concert on feb 11th looks pretty good if you're lucky enough to get tickets.
