"The rat race is for rats. And we're not rats."

He was a giant and there're very few left like him.

And with legislation on the cards to stop trade unions being able to contribute to party funds it looks like working men and women are going to need to find even more heroic figures than Jimmy if they're to have any kind of voice.

Sounds like a true Trade Union leader with the real sentiment of what trade unions used to stand for. Not the polictically motivated, self-important ones we have around today.

In all walks of life you find those that're primarily motivated by what they can get for themselves as well as those who are concerned more with what they can give of themselves.

It's perhaps true that there are more and more of the former around. For me the definition of heroic includes the latter.

Can only echo what people have said. A sad loss of a good man.
They have a great quote from him on the BBC:
"We are not going to strike. We are not even having a sit-in strike.
Nobody and nothing will come in and nothing will go out without our permission. And there will be no hooliganism, there will be no vandalism, there will be no bevvying because the world is watching us."
He wasn't being weak, he was laying down their rights to work and to fight wth dignity.
Could do with a few more like him just now. x

Really moving stuff, especially what he said to his friend Billy Connolly.
Looking at a council estate, he said: "Behind every one of these windows is somebody who might be a horse-jumping champion, a formula one racing champion, a yachtsman of great degree, but he'll never know because he'll never step on a yacht or formula one car - he'll never get the chance."
Feel that there's no many politicians that really believe that now. Made me sad.

Yeah me too - his sense of fairness was what stood out and unfortunately appears to be what is lacking in politicians these days. I heard a fitting tribute on radio yesterday to the great man. Brought a tear to my eye and a smile to my lips especially the bit about Jimmy Reid visiting No. 10 with the 'Work In Committee' and refusing Ted Heath's offer of a scotch malt whisky. Afterwards, he told a reporter it will go down as one of the greatest self-sacrifices made by the working classes and that they didn't only build ships in The Clyde - they built men! RIP Jimmy Reid - we could all learn something from you
