Article on page 7 of October's "Toast" magazine.

I've heard a few rumours but this is the first time I've seen anything in print.

Aparrently the pub is due to change hands shortly and the new owners aren't going to do live music (sound familiar? I'm thinknig the Shakespear).

Anyone else heard anything?

The facts:

The current owner is actually moving into the premises.
They'll be stopping having bands on.

Possibly still do some acoustic stuff. But the current PA will be gone. When exactly is up in the air. Owner is planning on Christmas but could be sooner if they have to move sooner.

Sad news about the Grapes, dunno why anyone would want to live there though
Anyone looking for an alternative Sheffield venue for a gig should check out the Queens Social Club, I saw the Dum Dum Girls there last weekend and it was brilliant, good sound / atmosphere, the stage even had silver foil tinsel stuff as a backdrop in true Phoenix Nights club stylee, only downside was the lack of pints as the bar only sold plastic bottles of carlsberg / cans of cider to non-members

I know Vic but it was his younger brother Jason, used to go to school with him and he's a good mate. our first couple of gigs were supporting Vic's band 'The Change' up at the Pheasant. they had the club for years, had many a boozy night there after gigs.

I work at Bethnal Green Working Men's Club which since about 10 years ago is both a venue for all sorts of brilliant nights (Rockabilly, 'London's Next To Tranny', Garage Nights etc) and a proper working men's club downstairs. It was gonna shut down because there weren't enough members, so my boss gave them a proposal and now it's totally booming and the members still have somewhere to drink.

Here I am onstage doing my thing (I'm the smaller, whiter man)...

I'm on the Secret Cinema mailing list and one of the screening venues is Bethnal Green Working Men's club. They have an event there this week I seem to remember.

The End:

Quote:
The final Grapes listings and message from Soundman Brian:

"morning all,
welcome to November,
my last missive to you for the time being as this month represents the last month of Grapes operation as a full time independent music venue.
...This document, then, serves as a final reminder, if you will, of the modus operandi we have employed over the last few years...independent promotions by independent bands/promoters, with us interfering as little as possible in the scheduling of what people want to put on.
I'd like to thank everyone who has attended, put on or played at any show at the grapes during the past while.
See you along down the track, I don't doubt it.
Best
Brian"
