Mmmmm. Think I will ring re age thing. It's in a church, FFS, I mean what inappropriate things will people be getting up to? H will presumerably not be calling people c***s, talking about being off his head on speed while out with the kids and punters won't be pissing up the gravestones. More tea, vicar?
Anyway, whether I bring my child or not, thought I would offer pub tips. On asking around the manor, people tell me that the Chesham, 5 Mehetabel Road, is still nice and quiet, nothing re-invented, gastro or gentrified about this one. Just a backstreet boozer with loads of middle aged blokes playing pool.
Probably the best bet is the Pembury Tavern,
http://www.individualpubs.co.uk/pembury/, which is very big, not too far away and serves real ale for you beer boys. In my day, it used to be a dog-on-string pub where you could always pick up a bit of pot on a Friday night. But apparently, it's not like that anymore, dahling.
And Biddle Bros on Lower Clapton Road is supposed to be nice. Jazz, tapas, cool. But when I lived there, it was a builders merchants, and I just refuse to go. No, no, no, I will not. In 20 years, will people be going to Wickes or Travis and Perkins for a swift gin? Sincerely, no, I cannot do it.
Whatever you do, do not be tempted to stroll down Homerton High Street to the Jackdaw and Stump or Adam and Eve. They are both only extensions of the betting shop and you may not come out alive. x
