Not a popular view, I know, but I dislike summer. I don't like being warm, never mind hot & this stinking humidity is getting me down. And by an evil coincidence, whereas I normally work outdoors at night, this week I'm working inside. Fed up.
Hey, don't worry Lofty, the wind, rain, sleet, snow, fog and freezing cold are just around the corner!
Oh I do hope so

What the hell is going on in primary schools these days? My 'only just' 7 year old grand-daughter has been kept in every lunchtime on her first week back for 'not finishing her work on time' - how do they imagine that is going to help her? Apparently she's not messing around, just too slow! So... excluding her from lunch break, playing with her friends, socialising and letting off steam - that's going to do wonders for her self-esteem! All about targets and SATS it seems, but somewhere in all this madness there are kids who just wanna be kids - just don't get it - world's gone flaming mad!

That sounds like very poor practice to me, I thought they'd left that sort of thing back in the 1970s. This struck a very loud chord with me - can I bore you with the story? I remember our class being asked to copy out a poem by a teacher, the fearsome Miss Franklin, who was standing in for our class teacher. I'd long been told my handwriting was scruffy, so decided to do my very best for this, so as not to incur Miss Franklin's wrath. I incurred it anyway - I was sharply told off for having copied out so little by the end off the class. So embarrassed by this I vowed to be the first to finish in future. Handwriting became worse of course & I was constantly in trouble for it. I'm still conscious of it now -I'm 52. I hope your grand daughters parents will be speaking to the school over this, it's wrong. I don't know what became of Miss Franklin, but I hope it hurt....

Thanks Lofty - hope it hurt too! So much pressure on little ones these days (and teachers I know), just seems insane to me - when do they get time to be kids?

This year continues to go downhill... Met this guy quarter of a century ago when he joined my school, teaching History and taking over some of my classes, as I moved to teaching just English. Before long, we hooked up in the same band too - Elvis Fontenot - and we've played in America three times, Ireland half a dozen times, France and Holland since then. We've been in the van on hundreds of occasions... He was always a bit OCD - when we played in Louisiana in 2003, I went to the loo in the middle of the night and the flush didn't work, so the bathroom floor was swimming in the morning - this was his cue to go and stay in a hotel - that was the first time. He slept in a small tent at the Maryport Blues Festival a couple of years back because he didn't want to share a dorm with several other bands, bless - not an easy option when you were six foot seven as he was. We both moved schools later in our careers, but ended up in neighbouring schools literally across the road from each other in Cheadle, Staffs. We couldn't get away from each other - we'd pass every day on the way to our joint sixth form and the weekends would be spent with me driving to and from gigs with Craig asleep in the passenger seat on the way back from such venues as the Navigation in Nottingham. On April 1st this year he was diagnosed with cancer and it was so far gone, they couldn't do anything for him. He died yesterday, in his late 40s. Beautiful man. Craig Beverley RIP.

I am so sorry Nick, What a shitty year for you. And I know the pain of losing one of your best pals only too well. Take good care of yourself and allow the misery to come out. It just gets worse if you don't. Lots of love, I'm thinking of you. Xxx

I'm already sick to death of Christmas. Left to me I wouldn't bother. Got to do it for mum though, as she's not really up to it on her own now. Feeling utterly resentful of the whole thing. Fed up.
